Manager’s Message

Happy New Year!

I am looking forward to an exciting year of growth and activity at the Burin Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. There are so many exciting things to tell you about I was not sure where to start. Then, of course, some of my many lessons in writing began flooding back and it became clear that I should start with our new benefits to you!

Added Value

We have been working diligently to ensure that you get value for your membership fee. In doing so, we have identified a couple of new benefits to help you maintain a healthy bottom line. The first is discounted hotel rates at a number of hotels in St. John’s. We realize that travel to the city is often a necessary expense whether it is for business, health reasons or leisure. We are proud to have partnered with four city hotels to offer you discounted rates. Details are available by clicking on the benefits tab.

In addition, we have also implemented two initiatives to save you time and help streamline your interaction with us. Our new website has many features that will allow you to access information about benefits, staff, directors and other members easily and efficiently. For the first time ever, the Burin Peninsula has a searchable database of businesses (must be a member of the Chamber to be listed). Best of all you get to control the information on your listing. In addition, you can now pay your membership fee and purchase tickets to our events online with your credit card using our secure website. Want more? You can become a premium member for a small annual fee. This allows you to have a mini webpage on our site. This is great for those of you who do not yet have a web presence and/or do not want the hassle of updating a web page. Also, you can now purchase advertising on our webpage. Check out the benefits section for details.

We are also implementing a card program. When you renew or become a member of the Burin Peninsula Chamber of Commerce you will receive a laminated wallet size card. This card will be your proof of membership and may be required when using the hotel discounts.

Strategic Plan

In 2012 the Burin Peninsula Chamber of Commerce developed its first Strategic Plan. The plan outlines the Chamber’s four strategic directions for the period covering January 2013 to December 2015. The strategic directions are: communicate the Chamber’s purpose, benefits and community role, promote and create opportunities for collaboration and information sharing, provide training education and professional development opportunities for the business community and be leaders in promoting both the economic and social well being of the community. The work of the Chamber will focus around these strategic directions and their related outcomes. To read the full strategic plan click here.

In addition to implementing the strategic plan the Chamber will be focused on acquiring accreditation with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. This process involves meeting the core definition of a Chamber of Commerce, as well as meeting all of the criteria under three mandatory pillars; Policy and Advocacy, Membership Programs/Services, and Organization/Administration. Many of the criteria overlap with the strategic directions set forth in the strategic plan.

I am looking forward to a busy and exciting year serving the Chamber and you, our membership. I have much more to share so stay tuned!
